James Kaczenski
Golf Course Superintendent
|
Jim Kaczynski has been the golf course superintendent at Sunset Hills Country Club since 1991. He came to Sunset Hills Country Club from Shelby, N.C. Jim completed his certification in 1992 as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent. In 1995 Jim was instrumental in overseeing a major renovation of the Sunset Hills Country Club golf course.
Eligibility for application to seek the Certified Golf Course Superintendent designation is specifically restricted to those individuals who are employed as a golf course superintendent and meet the criteria outlined in the 12 page eligibility for certification document. Once accepted into the program an applicant has 12 months to complete all requirements. An applicant will have their golf course visited by two certified superintendents. This is called an attesters visit, which must be done during the growing season. A detailed analysis is done by standard guidelines and the overall score for passing is 85%. An applicant must pass a written examination, which covers six sections: Knowledge of GCSAA and its Certification Program, The Game and Rules of Golf, Turf-grass Management, Pest Control, Safety and Compliance, Financial Management, and Human Resource Management. The written test takes six hours and each section must be passed with a minimum score of 85%.
Each Certified Golf Course Superintendent must renew their certification every five years. During each five year period one must obtain the required amount of Certified Educational Units which are offered through seminars and conferences throughout the United States.
There are approximately 20,000 GCSAA members and fewer than 1,900 are certified. Jim states “it was a personal goal of mine and it was an honor to become a Certified Golf Course Superintendent.”
